OVERVIEW:
During the 2006-07 school year all
major indicators show improvement in student achievement,
however, there is still significant progress to be
made. We are headed in the right direction, but assessment
results are still below our expectations and strategies are
in place and being improved upon in order to continue this
upward trend for the students of Watervliet. The
identification of the Watervliet Jr.-Sr. High School as a
School In Need of Improvement (SINI) is the greatest
challenge faced by the district. This identification is
based on the performance of the Special Education subgroup
on the eighth grade ELA assessment. The School Improvement
Team, in cooperation with Capital Region BOCES, has
submitted a School Improvement Plan to the Board of
Education and The New York State Education Department. The
plan, which is being implemented this year, enables school
administrators to make the curricular and instructional
adjustments needed to better serve this group of students
and meet the New York State Learning Standards today and
into the future. The district will also be focusing on
developing both long and short range plans for improving the
high school graduation rate.
2007-08 Programs:
WJSHS has added several new programs
this year to increase the rigor and relevance of the
curriculum while providing the support students need to be
successful. New advanced placement (AP) and college credit
bearing classes have been added, starting with an AP
Government and Economics course. In addition, expanded
Academic Intervention Services (AIS) are being offered at
the high school level. Alos, a new administrative position
has been created to monitor the academic achievement of
students at the middle school.
WES also has several new offerings.
The ALPHA Gifted and Talented Class is offered to students
who are performing at the mastery level in ELA and math.
Also, foreign language has been added to the curriculum with
an after-school enrichment program in Spanish.
