Working towards a cooler and "greener" WES:
The pictures below are from the installation
of the new energy-efficient cooling units at the elementary school.
The new environmentally friendly system uses ice to supplement
or replace air conditioning. Essentially, the system generates cold
air at night, “saving it up,” then using it during the heat of the
day when it’s needed. The system uses electricity to freeze water in
large tanks (pictured below) at night when power demands are low,
allowing the district to take advantage of off-peak electric rates.
The cool air emanating from the ice is then piped through the
building during the day. At night the water is frozen again and the
cycle is repeated.
