Watervliet City Schools
earns school safety award!
Watervliet City School District is one of 100
school districts and BOCES in the state to receive a “2008 School
Safety Excellence Award” from the Utica National Insurance Group.
Utica National officials presented the award at its 28th annual
school safety seminar, one of seven held in New York State. Utica
insures more than 300 school districts in upstate New York for
property and liability insurance and is one of the leading companies
in the field.
Watervliet City Schools received a Titanium level honor which
included a certificate from the company celebrating the district’s
safety efforts and a $500 award to help further these efforts.
“We are so pleased to have been honored with this award which
reflects our concerns about school and student safety,” said
Superintendent Paul Padalino. “We’ll be putting the cash award right
back into our safety budget so we can further our safety program
goals. We’re looking at purchasing an on-site ID badge maker and
this could help offset some of the cost of that equipment.”
“It is with great pleasure that we honor schools that not only take
safety to heart, but go above and beyond to provide a safe, healthy
and focused culture for learning,” said James Kristoff, Eastern
Regional Office Loss Control Manager for Utica National.
Utica National’s School Safety Excellence Award Program helps
participating schools enhance overall safety through measurable
assessment. The program evaluates schools on up to 17 categories,
from school playground safety to indoor air quality, with specific
quantifiable data-gathering surveys. “The pay-off goes beyond the
award and recognition – if our program is followed properly, it
should enable schools to pinpoint specific threats to safety,” Mr.
Kristoff said.
The award program has three levels (titanium, platinum and gold) in
which schools can earn a meritorious distinction by meeting specific
criteria.
