Continuum of Services - In District Programs

In District Special Education Programs
 

Districtwide:


Watervliet Elementary School:
A continuum of services is provided for special education students at the elementary school.

  • Related Services- Students receive appropriate support services from speech therapists, occupational therapist, physical therapists and student assistant counselors.

  • Resource Room - Students receive supplementary instruction in a individualized or small group instruction for a “pull-out” or “push-in” setting for a portion of the day.

  • Inclusionary Classroom Services – the inclusionary classroom model provides special education services to students within the general education classroom setting. In this way, special education students are not pulled out of their classrooms and both the regular education and special education teachers can coordinate services delivery to special needs students. This classroom design is used in grades Kindergarten – Grade 6.

  • Self-Contained Classrooms – There is one program for grades 1-3 (new 06-07) and two programs for 4-6. It is designed for students who, because of their disability, would not be able to function successfully in a regular education classroom. Emphasis is placed on reading, writing, listening, and math skills. Maximum class size – 12 students, 1 special education teacher and 2 paraprofessional.


Watervliet Junior/Senior High School
At Watervliet Junior/Senior High School we service students with a variety of disabilities and therefore, offer a variety of programs to meet these needs along with the related services of speech and counseling.

 

Junior High School Program
At the Junior High School level, special education teachers and teacher assistants are members of the seventh and eighth grade teams. Their day is spent exclusively working with Junior High students. The primary goal is to begin to integrate the CSE identified students into the mainstream as much as possible. The programs at this level are as follows.

  • Self-Contained English 7-8, Self-Contained Math 7-8, Self-Contained Science 7-8 and Self Contained Social Studies – these programs are designed for those students who, because of their skill level, would not be able to function successfully in a regular seventh or eighth grade class without the extra support. Emphasis is placed on basic reading, writing, listening skills and applying this information to life situation. Maximum – 15 students.

  • Consultant Teacher Services – this services is provided to students at the Junior High level in the four core areas of English, Math, Science and Social Studies for a minimum of two hours per week. Consultant teacher is provided directly to the student or to the mainstream teacher depending on the student’s individual needs.

  • Curriculum Support – This program is a resource room services where support in mainstream classes is given in a grouping of 5 to 1.

Senior High School Programs

  • Self-Contained English 9-12 – This class is designed for students who need to have the English 9-12 material presented in a small group setting with consideration given to their specific disabilities in reading and writing. Effort is made to present instructional material equivalent to that of regular English 9-12 classes. This class also provides preparation for the Regents Competency Tests in reading and writing. Passing the class enables students to earn one high school credit. Maximum – 15 students.

  • Consultant Teacher Services – This service is provided to high school students in the four core areas. It is provide directly to the student or to the student’s regular education teacher, depending on the student’s educational needs.

  • Wilson Reading 7-12 – This is non-credit bearing, self-contained reading class for students who because of their severe reading disabilities need an intensive program that is phonics based with an emphasis on expression language as well as reading. This group meets three times a week. Maximum – 6 students.

  • Self-Contained math 9-12 – This is a program designed for high school students in preparation for the Regents Competency Test in math. Students enrolled in this class have math skills at approximately a fourth grade level. Successful completion of this course results in one high school credit. Maximum – 15 students.

  • Curriculum Support – This is a resource room program designed to provide senior high school students with the academic support necessary to pass their mainstream classes.

  • Life Skills 9-12 – This is a self-contained program that has an emphasis on applying the information that the students learn to life situations. (Ex. Purchasing items, budgeting money, paying bills, cooking)

New Self – Contained Programs at the Jr./Sr. High School

  • Self-Contained 7-8 & Self-Contained 9-12 – SC 7-8 was a new program last year (06-07) SC 9-12 is new this year. These programs serve students who are learning disabled and may also process mild emotional needs. These students are in need of a supportive and structured environment. The teacher will be reinforcing positive behaviors and social skills utilizing behavior management systems with consistent and clear rewards and reinforcements. The instructional needs of the students in the class are met on an individual and small group basis. Social work and other related services are an integral part of this program Ratio 12:1:2

  • Self-Contained Social Emotional 7-9 – This is a new program this year. This program serves students whose needs are primarily social/emotional. The children in the program will have similar academic abilities and social and emotional needs. A social work component helps students work toward academic and behavioral goals through individual and group counseling and serves as liaison to families and local services providers. Ratio 12:1:2
