Sixth-graders celebrate completion of elementary school career

Nearly 100 sixth-graders celebrated a milestone on June 22, as they each received a certificate of graduation from Watervliet Elementary School.

Sixth-graders Jared Frament and Josie Munhall served as Masters of Ceremony and welcomed parents, family members, friends and teachers to Watervliet Junior-Senior High School for the ceremony officially marking the end of the students’ elementary school careers.

As the former WJSHS principal, Superintendent Dr. Lori Caplan offered the sixth-grade graduates a few words of wisdom as they prepare to enter grade 7 in the fall:

Take care of your books because academics only become more challenging and expectations reach new heights in junior and senior high school;

Participate in extracurricular activities to feel connected to your school community; and

Make good choices, don’t follow the crowd.

Before presenting the individual achievement awards, Watervliet Elementary School Principal Theresa O’Brien shared her thoughts with the graduates.

“Your years here [in elementary school] have been filled with wonderful memories, friendships, and opportunities to learn. Your families, your teachers, and your school community were partners in helping you learn all that you could,” she said. “Remember as you move on from WES that you are the most important person in your education.”

Sixth-grade teachers then called each student to the front of the auditorium stage where they received their certificates from Principal O’Brien, and well wishes from Dr. Caplan and Board of Education President Mark Scully.
