Some students at WES enjoyed an extra
treat at lunch today - a personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut
which they earned by reading!
Pizza Hut's BOOK IT! program motivates children to
read by rewarding their reading accomplishments with praise,
recognition and pizza. BOOK IT! runs every school year from
October through March. Each teacher sets a reading goal for
their class. Goals are based on reading ability, and
teachers have the freedom to determine what works for their
class. Number of books, number of pages, or number of
minutes – they all work.
Student's track their progress and
earn monthly rewards. Rewards include a free, one-topping
Personal Pan Pizza, BOOK IT! card, clip and sticker. Usually
students have to go to a local Pizza Hut restaurant to
redeem their rewards, but this year (thanks to Krista Daley,
manager of the Pizza Hut on Delatour Street) the
pizza came to WES!
Thanks to the assistance of Mary
Schoonmaker and the helpful WES food service staff,
115 students received a pizza reward during their
regularly scheduled lunch period.
"Literacy is so fundamental to
every bit of learning that these students will do throughout
their academic careers, so it is great to see a national
business like Pizza Hut promote reading," said Kathleen
Strangis, Reading and UPK Director. "This is a great
program. The kids already love pizza and BOOK IT! helps them
learn to love reading too." |
