On October 25th, eight members of the Watervliet Masterminds team and their coach Mr. Yuriy Berin, traveled to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York to compete in a Quiz Bowl tournament featuring eleven other schools from all over the state. Nick Hodges, Adam Herman, Megan Cole, Emily Roden, Kevin Angus, Jesse Lehnert, Andrew Kelley, and Sarah Schelde each participated in the eleven games and lead the team to fifth place in New York State. With a record of six wins to five losses, many of which were very close (last game was decided in overtime), the team did extremely well for the first competition of the year. Individually, junior Sarah Schelde placed eighth in points, Adam Herman placed eleventh and Jesse Lehnert seventeenth scored out of 68 individuals. Sarah contributed 280 points, Adam 260 and Jesse 150 to our team. Sarah received Cornell University Quiz Bowl award for scoring 29 points per game.

The team features five returning seniors and three juniors who competed for the first time on Saturday. Congratulations to the whole team and good luck in the upcoming Masterminds season!
