STUDENTS, STAFF COMPETE FOR FIRST PRIZE IN UGLIEST HOLIDAY SWEATER COMPETITION
Dec. 23, 2011
The competition this year for ugliest holiday sweater at Watervliet Jr.-Sr. High School was a tough fought battle.
On Friday, Dec. 23, approximately 20 students and staff members vied for the honor and a panel of discerning judges had a difficult choice narrowing down the field to the final four contenders.
Some competitors raided relatives’ closets for the most hideous sweater they could find, while others wore their own creations—embellishing dollar store sweaters with sequins, patches, ornaments, gift cards and other holiday-themed accessories.
Contenders strutted down the catwalk several times, until finally ninth-grader Mitch Capitula—wearing his mother’s bright red sweater with faux pearl snowmen and snowflake accents—snagged first place. Capitula received movie passes to the Regal Cinemas for his first place finish, but wasn’t too sure how his mother would react to the news.
The Top 4 runners up in the Ugliest Sweater contest were Patrick Reinfurt, Nick Brown and Elise Peterson. Each received i-Tunes gift cards. Jason Williamson received an honorable mention as the fifth runner up. Thanks and happy holidays to participants!
