Recently, two World War II Veterans
spent the afternoon with Mr. Burke's history classes. Robert
Gusberti and Sheldon Jones spoke to the students about their
service in the war and answered the student's questions
about what the real life experience was like.
"You can learn so much more by talking
with these men than you can by reading a text book," said
one student. "It is amazing to hear their stories,
especially since our country is at war right now."
Part if the session included a lively
discussion about differences between World War II and the
current conflict in Iraq. Differences in available weapons
and safety equipment, the role of technology and cultural
attitudes towards war were all a part of the discussion.
Students were especially amazed by differences on the home
front.
"It is so easy for us to just pretend
that we aren't at war and back then you couldn't do that,"
said another student.
"These men have so much to share with
our students, we are so honored that they chose to spend the
afternoon with us, and we thank them whole heartedly," said
Mr. Burke. |
