Team wins
Capital Region Envirothon, moves on to statewide competition
|
On April 24,
Jesse Lehnert, Nick Hodges, Tom Horton and Adam Herman
proved they know their stuff when they took first place for
Albany County in the Capital Region Envirothon. The
Envirothon is a series of hands-on contests in which teams
of high school students compete to solve environmental
problems. The event, which was sponsored by the
Albany County Soil and Water Conservation District,
works much like an athletic competition, and the winners of
each event get the chance get to move on to compete at
higher levels like the
New York
State competition and eventually the
National Canon
Envirothon. Categories they tackled included forestry,
soils, aquatics, wildlife, and a current issue that changes
each year. |

The team,
made up of all 11th graders, is coached by Mr. Bowden and
this is the farthest a team representing Watervliet has ever
gotten. "I'm really proud
of these guys," said Bowden. "We've been bringing teams for
7 or 8 years and these guys are really doing a great job."
The team now
moves on to the New York State competition on May 21st and
22nd at SUNY Cobleskill. At the two-day competition they
will not only have to solve the challenges in the various
categories, they will also have to give an oral presentation
of a mock environmental impact study in which they had to
take on the role of New York State Department of
Environmental Conservation (DEC) Employees. In this study
they had to take into account "combating climate change,
providing people with opportunities for outdoor nature
activities, fostering green and healthy communities,
building a toxic free future and safeguarding New York’s
unique natural areas."
We wish them
the best of luck at the state competition!
