Watervliet Civic Center leader recognized for support of the city's youth

Congratulations to Watervliet Civic Center Director Bill Sheehy for recently being selected a “Friend of Education” by the Capital Area School Development Association (CASDA).

CASDA’s Friends of Education Award pays tribute to school community members whose dedication and commitment profoundly impacts the educational experience of students.

Superintendent Dr. Lori Caplan nominated the longtime leader of the Civic Center for this award. In her nomination letter, she wrote: “Bill is an advocate for the youth of the City of Watervliet and our community and school district are lucky to have him.

For more than 15 years, Mr. Sheehy has been at the helm of the Watervliet Civic Center continuously working to secure grants and donations for the non-profit organization, which is similar to a Boys' & Girls' Club, for the city’s children.

He partnered with the Watervliet City School District for the Food is Fuel backpack program that launched this school year and provides backpacks filled with nonperishable food items to 55 of the highest needs elementary students every Friday to ensure they have enough to eat over the weekend.

He oversees the before- and after-care program for elementary students, charging a nominal fee for parents to have a safe place for their children as they go to work before the school day begins and after it ends.

Bill secured an Arts in Education grant with the Capital District Arts Council in Troy, which has provided an artist-in-residency program for the sixth grade during the past three years.

Most recently, he wrote a grant through which the Civic Center was awarded a variety of used fitness equipment from Vent Fitness for students to work out after school, improving their health and wellness.

Mr. Sheehy supports children and their families with assistance every holiday season, as well as operating a summer program that offers safe and fun opportunities for children who would otherwise have little to no positive activities when school is not in session. He also operates a lawn care business that employs many Watervliet students during the spring, summer and fall months.

The Friends of Education Award was introduced in 2015 to recognize the diverse contributions of dedicated individuals from all parts of the school community. While honorees include educators, staff members, parents and community members, recipients are united by a common commitment to supporting students and schools

Mr. Sheehy was among 25 individuals from around the capital Region to be honored at the annual CASDA Friends of Education Awards Dinner on Feb. 16.
