Longtime school board president steps down

During the Board of Education meeting on June 8, outgoing Board President Mark Scully and board member Michael Hartkern were recognized for their service to Watervliet’s students, staff and community.

A lifelong resident of the city and a graduate of Watervliet schools, Mr. Scully served on the board for the past 15 years, holding the office of president since 2009.

“This has been a very rewarding experience,” Mr. Scully said. “As a district, we have overcome many obstacles. I have appreciated everyone’s cooperation. The collaboration between the administration and the staff has made the job easy.”

Dr. Caplan, who was high school principal when Mr. Scully's two sons, Ryan and Connor, graduated from Watervliet High School several years ago, thanked Mr. Scully for his time and dedication, calling him "the biggest supporter of our district and our students."

“In recent years, the board has had to make some really tough decisions, but Mr. Scully has always acted in the best interests of the community and children. I appreciate his encouragement, his leadership and his friendship," Dr. Caplan said.

She also thanked Mr. Hartkern for his time and his commitment during his term on the board. He also is a graduate of Watervliet schools, and has two sons enrolled in Watervliet Elementary School. “In his short tenure, Mike, too, has acted in the best interest of our students,” Dr. Caplan said. “I’m confident that he will continue to be actively involved in our schools and the Watervliet community.”

Former school board members Chris Daus, Matt Ethier and Jennifer Donovan, who all served with Mr. Scully, attended the meeting to wish him well in his retirement from the board.

Mr. Ethier and current board member Jeff Shellenberger thanked Mr. Scully for the guidance and support that he provided his board colleagues.

Mr. Daus, also a lifelong resident and graduate of Watervliet schools, thanked Mr. Scully and Mr. Hartkern for their service and applauded the board’s commitment and its collaborative nature. “Everyone knows that being a BOE member is a tough job. You always try to make the right decisions, but can’t please everyone all the time,” he said. “I congratulate Mark and Mike for a job well done.”
